Estimation of Circulating Renin in Normal and Toxemic Pregnancy.

چکیده
Toxemia of pregnancy is a symptom complex which occurs during pregnancy and consists of three essential manifestations; hypertension, proteinuria and edema. Although extensive attempts have been made to explain the genesis of toxemia, none is satisfactory to date. Recently it has been assumed that a humoral substance is liberated and changes the metabolism of the gravids. Hunter and Howard1) reported that there occurred a pressor substance, named "histerotonin", in the placenta and the plasma of toxemic patients, which caused hypertension. On the other hand, many investigators2-7) observed that the excretion and the secretion of aldosterone were increased in pregnancy. In recent years, it has been made clear that the factor regulating excretion and/or secretion of aldosterone is renin-angiotensin systems8,9). In the earlier papers10,11) from this laboratory on the assay of circulating ren in, it was reported that plasma renin was elevated in patients with secondary aldosteronism and in normal subjects under salt deprivation, a condition known to

The C19-mineralocorticoids in hypertension.
The excretion rates of the C19-mineralcorticoids, 16beta-hydroxy-DHEA and 16-oxo-androstenediol, were measured in subjects with low-renin essential hypertension and toxemia of pregnancy. C19-mineralocorticoid excretion in low-renin essential hypertension ranged from 70-790 microgram per day. No significant difference in 16beta-hydroxy-DHEA and 16-oxo-androstenediol excretion was found between t...
متن کاملRoles of the circulating renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in human pregnancy.
This review describes the changes that occur in circulating renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) components in human pregnancy. These changes depend on endocrine secretions from the ovary and possibly the placenta and decidua. Not only do these hormonal secretions directly contribute to the increase in RAAS levels, they also cause physiological changes within the cardiovascular system an...
متن کاملStudies of maternal and fetal 11-deoxycorticosterone, corticosterone,18-hydroxycorticosterone and aldosterone in normal and toxemic pregnancy.
Simultaneous determination of maternal and fetal plasma 11-deoxycorticosterone (DOC), corticosterone (B), 18-hydroxycorticosterone (18OH-B) and aldosterone (ALDO) in normal and toxemic pregnancies was performed by utilizing a newly developed radioimmunoassay. The mean levels of plasma DOC and ALDO in normal term pregnancy were significantly higher than those of nonpregnant women. Comparing the ...
متن کاملAtrial natriuretic peptide and sodium azide dependent guanylate cyclase activities in placentas from normal and severely toxemic patients.
Particulate guanylate cyclase is stimulated by several hormones through receptor-dependent and by nitrosovasodilators through receptor-independent mechanisms. A subtype of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) receptors is coupled to guanylate cyclase. It has been shown that there is a down-regulation of the affinity of ANP receptors to alpha-hANP in placental plasma membranes obtained from severely...
متن کاملComparative Study of the Effects of Tetraethyl-
Persistence of elevated blood pressure in toxemia of pregnancy following autonomic blockade with tetraethylammonium chloride (TEAC) has been reported previously by the authors ( 1 ). Subsequently many of the patients studied were treated with subcutaneous veratrum viride with consistent depressor effects. The apparent opposing actions of these two drugs in toxemia, together with a suggestion th...
